TRAFFIC NOISE ON THE TAPE OF THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.
THERE IS NO "BLANK" TAPE BETWEEN TUNES, AND NO LEADER TAPE THERE, EITHER.
THE ORIGINAL RECORDING ENGINEER (ROBERT VON BAHR) GOT THE MUSIC GROUP SET UP JUST WHERE HE WANTED THEM, GOT EVERYBODY QUIETED DOWN, TURNED ON THE RECORDER, THEN ABOUT 5 SECs LATER, GAVE THEM THE SIGN TO BEGIN PLAYING.
PERSONALLY, I FOUND THE NOISE BETWEEN TUNES RATHER FASCINATING, AS IT LETS THE LISTENER LIVE IN THAT LARGE CATHEDRAL DURING THE MUSIC PERFORMANCE.
Stan Ricker (www.rickermaster.com):
THE TAPES SOUND RATHER MARVELLOUS
THERE ARE SOME HUGE FINGER-CYMBAL CRASHES, AND WHIP CRACKS THAT I DON'T SEE HOW TELDEC CUT IT REAL TIME WITHOUT SEVERE TREBLE LIMITING AND SEVERE ACCELERATION LIMITING...........WHICH CAN BE CUT QUITE EFFECTIVELY AT HALF-SPEED...
I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO SEE THE TAPE MACHINE..........THIS HAS TURNED OUT TO BE KINDA LIKE A DIRECT TO DISK SESSION; YOU PRACTICE YOUR MOVES A LOT, AND THEN JUST DO IT
This is one of the TOP discs ever! An amazing opportunity...
When I first sent the email to Robert von Bahr I did not get a yes. Also this time it took a long time to have a yes and an agreement. Robert sent me the very precious original master tapes and I forwarded them immediately to Stan Ricker for another Half Speed mastering.
Stan made a lot of comments on how hard was to cut them! It took 21 lacquers and a couple of cutting heads to get want we wanted.
And meanwhile the precious Stan's lathe got broken (power supply) and we needed to wait for Prof. Johnson to prepared new (and upgraded) power supply boards for the custom made audio boards of the lathe.
So, after 3 generations of test pressings we got the final result we wanted.
